Gift Card Buying Guide | Gift Certificate Buying Guide
Gift cards or gift certificates are viewed by many as the perfect gift. You give something that lets the recipicent choose exactly what they want. Yet, buying gift cards or gift certificates can be somewhat treacherous. Sometimes there are time limits or "fine print" restrictions. Some gift cards can be purchased at a discount if you know where to buy them. Here is a brief guide to buying gift cards.
Try to Find a Fee - Free CardBefore purchasing a gift card, make sure there are no added fees involved.
Usually, the cards with fees are found with those that allow you to use it with many different stores, rather than a single store like toys r us or Macys.
Most of the time the "fees" are not high -- around $5 or $10, yet they can be avoided if you look for a no fee card or certificate. If you choose to purchase a card on eBay that normally has a fee, the price you pay usually includes the fee.
Sometimes the card can charge the recipient a fee to not use it! One type of fee that is found, is a non-use fee. This fee is applied if the card is not used within a certain period of time. Another is a maintenance fee if the card carries a balance after it was initially used. There are also expiration dates to be aware of and no-cash back rules (when you use $30 on a $50 card, the store will not give you $20 cash back -- you must keep the balance on the card).
Find a Gift Card Bargain
There are several ways to find a gift card bargain:
Many credit cards that have reward points allow you to "trade-in" your points for a gift card. Although it may seem easy to get enough points to get a gift card, it may not be a "great deal" since many gift cards will require 3 - 4,000 points for a $25 gift card. Reward points usually equal about 2 cents, so this isn't a good bargain unless your points are going to expire or you have so many you don't know what to do with them. Yet, the gift card would make a GREAT gift!
Buy someone else's old gift cards. There are usually over a 1000 gift card auctions on ebay (click here to view) . Many of these auctions offer gift cards for bidding at alot less than the value with no reserve. If you keep watch you can usually find a great deal. Just make sure the seller has POSITIVE feedback as a SELLER. That really is the main precaution. You can also, purchase with a credit card and reverse the charges if the gift card you receive is not what you anticipated.
Gift Cards do make wonderful gifts. They usually make the recipient happy that he or she can get something they truly desire. Just make sure you read the fine print!
